Well earlier today I got the dreaded "too many connections" error, partially the reason some of you are here is because of this error at a previous host. Let me attempt to explain why it happened here. Even though we are "right on it" usually when the Data 1 servers malfunction, server1 had been experiencing a lot of little hiccups. In an attempt to relieve some of the strain from this server I started dialing the settings down (one of them max connections) till I felt the server could handle it. As it turns out the problem all along was a faulty network cable that was replaced about 4 days ago. The cable made a huge difference and everything was smooth for days till about 5PM EST today when so many people accessed their boards that the safe setting I had neglected to change back wasn't high enough to handle the connections. I have raised the max connections and I don't expect any more difficulties. For those of you that read this and are going... "HUH?" the summary is that we watch the servers like a hawk and will do everything in our power to make sure your boards run as well as they can.

I'm still battling it. You can't just set it at a million connections, the server would go in to a panic and freeze up! I am in the process of increasing the connections again and lowering the time a loose connection can stay open. There is plenty of room to move on the configuration but it would be irresponsible to set everything at it's max. Worse case scenario I will move a couple accounts to a bigger server which we should have in place soon. Message being this is not going to be the normal, we will take care of it whatever it takes.

UPDATE Have increased available connections by 25% and closing open connections in half the time, about where I was before they found the bad cable.
