Sorry if this may sound like a simplton question to some, but here goes. What are sub domains used for and why? What would be a good use for sub domains? Thanks

Well you could use a sub to setup another site, for instance if some of your forum members were running an event and you allowed them to set up a domain using your own domain name. As an example, my domain name is goldwingfacts.com and some of my members were thinking of asking me to host a site for an event in the Isle of Man next year. This would have been called something like isleofman.goldwingfacts.com

That is a cool idea.So you could almost set up a personal web page of sorts for a member. Would they have control over the content? without having access to the rest of the site?

You can grant FTP access to that folder only in your cpanel. Sub domains in my opinion should only be used when you have to. A lot of people set up unnecessary subs and it sometimes lengthens the URL especially if they intend on using the WWW which is never needed. I use subs for the trial boards and I understand using it for members sites.

Jim wrote:using the WWW which is never needed. Hi Jim, It's needed to auto-generate links in rich text editors and email clients if the "http" part is omitted. e.g. mydomain . com will be rendered as plain text. www . mydomain . com or http : / / mydomain . com will be rendered as a clickable link. In fact, you can see it happening right here: mydomain.com http://www.mydomain.com http://mydomain.com cheers, Martin.

I have one hosting account with one of the companies I host with. I currently have 8 different subdomains that are completely different websites. Is that what you mean?
