I have a couple of members on my forum that say they are getting a message saying "This website wants to run the following add-on: 'Windows Media Player' from 'Microsoft Corporation'. If you trust the website and the add-on and want to allow it to run, clickhere...". I’m not sure why only a couple members would get that message and I’m not sure why there are getting that message. The only things I have added to the forum are Google ads, a webring, and a chat box. I wouldn’t think any of those things would have anything to do with Window Media Player. Does anyone have an idea what it might be?

They are getting the message when reading the forum. The add-on is Windows Media Player.

I’m not exactly sure what they are reading when they get the messages but I’ll find out and get back with you. It seems strange why only a couple members would have this problem. It makes me wonder if they have spyware or something on their computers.

Do you have any "widgets" loaded on your home page in the side menu? How about embedded sound files (.wav, .mwv, .mp3) or a sound that plays when a PM is waiting?

It doesn't sound too "evil", this happens sometimes if you have added anything above and the client has not updated their media player in a while.

Viruses and ad ware usually don't give you much of a choice to cancel them. The really dangerous ones these days call themselves:
Windows Antivirus 2008
Microsoft Antivirus 2008
XP Antivirus 2008

And ALL have IMPRESSIVE professional looking pages they send you to so you can willfully damage your computer extensively and feel the need to give them more money. I hate scams.

I don’t have any widgets or sound files. I found out one member was actually getting an ActiveX message and not a media player message. I know Cbox uses ActiveX, so that solves that problem. I’m still waiting to hear more details from the other member.

I thought I’d report that I finally found out what the media player add-on message is for on my forum. It’s for an animated Google ad. It never happened to me until a couple of days ago. The Google ads display something different for every user and for some reason most users weren’t getting animated ads. Or at least they weren’t mentioning it. Only one member reported getting a media player message.

Glad it is resolved, I guess it doesn't fall under "widgets" and it would have been almost impossible to track being it is random.

Good debug work there-
