I was extremely excited about this movie. I could not wait to see it. And then when the early reviews came out and they were outrageously positive I thought for sure I would be let down. Even Rotten Tomatoes had it at 95% positive which NEVER happens on that website. People were going crazy calling it one of the best movies of the year, or ever made. I thought that this must be hysteria surrounding Ledger's recent death. So the group of us I went with all decided NOT to be overcome by all of the positve reviews and just watch it and make our own decision on if the movie was great or not.

Well after seeing it i can say this 100% - it is amazing. It is not just a great "super hero" movie, it is an incredible movie from start to finish. I would be shocked if it does not win multiple awards and potentially even Best Picture. At a bare minimum Ledger should win for best supporting (or lead) actor. Dead or alive, his portrayal of the Joker is beyond memorable. It is creepy, unique and a character for the ages.

The plot is deep, twisting, and filled with a ton of character plot lines. Visually the movie is dark, but also HUGE. The entire city is used, destroyed, and featured. The action is as good as any action film in recent memory and there is also multiple relationship story lines and some humor on top of it all.

Bale further establishes himself as the standard for the role and is even more perfect as Batman then Tobey Maguire is as Spiderman (and Maguire is pretty darn good in that role)

With an all star cast that includes Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, Michael Caine, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gary Oldman, AND Morgan Freeman it is hard to decide who does a better acting job. They ALL are exceptional in their roles. Eckhart is perfect as Harvey Dent / Two Face and Freeman (Lucius Fox), Caine (Alfred) and Oldman (Lt James Gordon) are are great again reprising their roles from Batman Begins.

I am betting that this movie tops the all time opening day record from May 2007 Spiderman 3 film's opening weekend mark of $151 million. It is that good.

Finally the movie is about 2.5 hours long but feels about 1 hour long because the pacing is so well and the editing is perfect. There are no lulls, no slow parts and not one scene I could say is off the mark. The movie IS pretty graphic in its killing and threats of killing. this is mainly due to the demonic Ledger who delivers many of his lines with a very creepy and scary delivery that will undoubtedly be compared to Anthony Hopkins role as Hannibal Lector. It is that good IMO.

I read a great review that captures the movie well at http://www.techtree.com/India/News/The_Dark_Knight_Review/551-91271-547.html

The IMDB link for the movie is http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0468569/

I would recommend EVERYONE go see this movie.

(I posted this on my forum also, but wanted to post here how much I loved this movie)

We have plans to take the boys to go see this movie this weekend but since its opening weekend, we may wait til next weekend.

I was actually surprised that they casted Oldman as Lt. Gordon. He just doesnt seem to be the type but it goes to show how versatile he is as an actor.

Thanks for the review! :)

Oldman was perfect in Batman Begins and continues his perfect role of Lt Gordon in this movie. But I will say this Di, the movie is very graphic, mainly Ledger and there have been stories of some younger kids being upset or scared by it. He is very scary in how he describes killing and disfiguring, etc.

oh man! :( I may have to rethink taking Jared. Even tho he has ALWAYS fallen asleep thru the movies we take him to (Spiderman 3, Transformers, etc.) theres no guarantee he will sleep thru this one and I dont want to risk him getting nightmares from it.

thanks for the warning, james.

remember that Spiderman and Iron Man are "bright daytime" super hero movies. this is an always dark, raining, dissection of the human soul movie. Check out that review link I posted. It captures the movie pretty well.

Remember - this is A GREAT movie. Maybe a top 10 of all time, but it is intense.

I still LOVED it!

Well James, so far you are the 6th person to be blown away by this movie and say it lives up to the hype. The other 5 have already gone to see it a second time. I have been assured that even though my heart breaks a little every time I think about or see Heath Ledger I should drag myself out to the theatre to see his performance as the Joker.

It's hard for me to believe he could ever top his portrayal of Ennis in Brokeback Mtn. but the consensus is that he does with this role. Different genre - just as powerful if not more impressive.

How terribly sad to think there will be just one more flick with his light. What a loss.

Di?
IMO I would not take the wee ones. Scared the bejesus out of a colleagues kid - they had to leave the theatre.

the role in Brokeback was unique/ground breaking for the times because of the overall subject matter. But this is one of those memorable one-of-a-kind roles, like H. Lector that will be remembered forever.

Looks like it IS going to break every record for all time - from usa today an hour ago - http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/news/2008-07-20-boxoffice_N.htm

Well, I have to cheerfully disagree with you on Brokeback because I don't think that is why it was so good at all... Having lived around real cowboys both gay and hetro -  his portrayal was dead on - that a boy from Australia could so thoroughly become the character was just mind blowing to me. He was Ennis, heart and soul. He no longer was Heath Ledger. That's what made him a great actor in my eyes. Same can be said of Hopkins - he was Hannibal - they both mastered their craft in these films.

Until I see Dark Knight I am only assuming Ledger becomes the Joker which IMO is what will make the character memorable.

I'll be taking my son to see Dark Knight next week. I kinda went off most of the Batmans simply because they are all too dark.

Over 300 million in record time. Will it catch Titanic's all time gross? Just amazing.
