Okay, I'm rapidly running out of age numbers that begin with 4 and as I gradually creep towards the half century, some odd thoughts come to mind. Stuff like making a will and all that important stuff are already taken care of, but there are lots of small issues. As forum owners, one of these issues is what happens to our forums when we pass away. I mean we all know that once the forums are still up and paid for, we won't be missed very much except for in a thread marking our passing. But what happens when the hosting fees for the month or year are used up? Would you really want your forum to disappear, or would you prefer that people continue to enjoy it after you are gone?
If so, you might do well to make one of your moderators a co-admin. Pick someone you know personally and whom you trust to keep it running and pay the hosting. Give him or her all your passwords to the forum and support site, CPanel etc, or just put them in a safe place to be given to him when the time comes. This way the forum you worked so hard to build and spent so many hours maintaining will have a chance of continuing and the members will remember you and maybe once a year raise a glass to you, or give you some mana. ;)

Of course you might just decide to say "stuff them, why should they have fun when I'm six feet under" and let the forum sink with you.

let me tell you .. being in your 50's is fabulous...

i turned 52 this past July and let me tell you its not as bad as everyone tells you it is...

age is just a number and life is what 'you' make it....

and im not ready to give up yet..im having to much fun

your right.... you do need to have someone that you trust to be able to carry on your board should something happen...

I have had and Admin with me since day one that i opened TBS and have known her from years before at another board that i was an Admin...

so she and i go back about 8 years and have met in person many times...so i feel comfortable with my choice of giving most of our site into to... Also Paul ( Mr M on TBS) is my hubby and if not for him to do the c-panel i would be lost... so he knows ALL to keep the boards up and running.....

so i feel i have TBS covered...

but you bring up a very good point something we should all be prepared for...

You have it well covered §issie, that's good. My own co-admin is a friend I've known a long time and he was one of the first on board the forum, so I'm happy enough with the arrangement.

Steve - I have a partner - she would just take over.

Wonder if I need that in writing somewhere. Jim? Di? How would that work? :twich:

Well....

I think we would have to handle this on an individual basis. Have had some experience with people trying to take over or take down other peoples boards at Wow.. especially with the political type discussion forums for some reason. I don't know what drives them to such depths of anger over politics but it has happened.

It's easy in my opinion to spot when someone is seriously needing help and when they are just disgruntled and wanting to shout at the top of a mountain.

Anyhow the info they have is a big clue. If they present private support name and password or if they have FTP or Cpanel log ins correct they could do major damage anyway.

If they had none of that info then a little reading on their board along with contacting key members on the board for verification... I don't think it's going to be much of a problem.

If there is someone you trust enough let them log in to private support as you and give some of their info like address, phone and e-mail we would certainly hand over the keys in event of disaster.

Wow what if a plane hit the Ultra labs and wiped all of us out here?

We have 4 Admins and have had for a number of years, sharing the costs.  Obviously the domains etc can only be in one person's name.  I guess we are lucky as we have all got on great and think along the same lines.  The person whose name everything is in suffers from ill health.   Because of this, she gave us all a copy of her contingency plan with dates of renewals etc, should she become incapacitated or die.  Obviously being admins, we already have passwords and access to ftp and cpanel.

She did this some time ago and said she was not being morbid, just practical and we appreciated that, as it wasn't something any of us had thought about.  She said it was a bit like making a will  :)

Well, that's good to know, Jim.
Boutty has all that stuff for my board too and would be able to confirm for her if something went awry with me (say 3 hail Marys and spin around 3Xs).

Ah the will issue...One of these days I have to get around to doing that.
I already know and have in writing who my cats will go to - that's always my main
concern.

The rest of my millions? Who knows?! LOL ;)
