I've been with wowbb for a long time. I gave WowUltra a look over because I have used wowbb for a long time, and I love it.

I'll quote some of my original post:
To be honest, I don't want a bulletin board that is just a board. Most of us don't, or else we wouldn't be begging for mods and customizations like we are. Once someone purchases wowbb the first questions out of their mouths are "How do I Integrate Wowbb with...." You get the meaning.

Social Networking in my opinion, is being developed in a backwards fashion. PHPFox, Boonex, PHPIzabi, Handshakes, Buddyzone--the list goes on and on. People buy it, and the first thing they want to do is upgrade the forums.

This is a wholly wrong approach. Social networking should start with a good board, and work outward, not the other way around.

Most of the changes to Wowbb in order to implement the first stages of a Social Networking site are already there. Private Messaging, User Profiles, Forum.  Those are the things people want and use more than anything else. They're already here. The only thing it is missing is:
  1. A more robust search--Geared more towards Members
  2. A stronger Profile layout
  3. Buddy List
Most everything else could be added later--but you really have all the makings for Social Networking right there. You don't have to burden your mind with how to integrate it with anything--your board would already have it there.

The only thing that really holds this board back, isn't the features of the board. Everyone likes the board. We've always liked the board. The things which holds us back is that there are so few features on the backend of the board.

I am hoping that someone will take a look at what I'm talking about and see the need. A Bulletin Board is a community. Stronger tools would allow you to build a stronger community. The user profiles is a prime example of what I'm talking about.

Even WowUltra has forgone developing the user profile. Not to bash anyone, but it's pedestrian, in terms of what it could be. I did the mock-up in Visio to show what I'm talking about. Take a look at the user profile layout I have there. Wouldn't you rather see something like that, than the way the profile layout is now?

Most of us buy a forum because we're not happy with the one that comes with whatever dating site, or social networking script or CMS we are working on. We have to go through the pains of integration, in order to get things to where we need them to be. It's much simpler to add pictures to the profile, followed by custom sections and give users an end to end community, then just a simple BB.

Point well taken. I did read this yesterday but wanted to think for a while before replying.

Being in Wow support I think I have heard requests for about every feature imaginable; it is part of the reason why Ultra even exists Being from the admin side of forums for years I tend to think of things from an admin perspective but the truth is admin comprises only a small percentage of any community. The members and how they interact or are able to interact because of the software would be the attraction. After all that is why they are there in
the first place is to interact with other people.

Good thoughts, thank you for sharing. I have about 3 core issues to address with the package before I can start adding features again but will put user profile overhaul on my hot list.

Jim,
I think it would be a good idea to have a ranking system like whem a member joins 1 star and it goes up with the posts and the latter is set by the admin
